Industrial photoshoot at Federal Mogul, Derbyshire

We were commissioned to undertake some professional industrial photography at Federal Mogul in Derbyshire (formerly Ferodo) to accompany a press releaseabout a new product.

The photographs were shot at the Federal-Mogul friction products technical centre and they illustrate a programme called Rebrake, which is a Government-sponsored consortium developing a technology for manufacturing brake discs from carbon composite manufacturing scrap. A key part of this is the interaction of the disc with the pad. Federal-Mogul is the pad specialist in the consortium.

The images were lit with hand and studio flash and as with all industrial shoots, space was tight, power sockets were scarce and the area needed cleaning and tidying to get the right effect.

This picture shows the Rebrake disc and pad installed on a vehicle for on-road testing. The disc is instrumented to record surface temperature.

This photograph shows a pad on the electron microscope. The structure of the friction surface is displayed on the monitor.

This image shows an automated machine for profiling and texturing the surface of the pads.
