Industrial images of new temporary rail bridge being craned in.

This photosession was commissioned by bridging clients Mabey, who were replacing an old road bridge over the railway line in Stoney Stanton in Leicestershire, with a temporary new bridge before the old one was dismantled.

As with most rail jobs, the work is carried out over a Saturday night as promptly and efficiently as possible, to minimise the necessary down time of the railway line, which is closed throughout the proceedings, and normally scheduled to reopen early on Sunday morning.

A project like this tend to be fraught with problems for the industrial photographer, not the least when the photographer is keen to get the best images possible for their client whilst maintaining a sensible safe distance and complying with site safety regulations.

Lighting (or lack of it!) can be an issue as only small areas of the whole site are illuminated and often by few very bright generator-powered flood lights which can cause hot spots on the image if directly in line with the camera.

The craning-in process happens remarkably quickly as it is the preparation of the site and the securing of the bridge afterwards that takes up most of the time.
