Industrial photography of pipe welding under river
Pipe Welding on Murphy Pipeline project - Client Groundforce Shorco
This photography commission for Groundforce Shorco, was undertaken to publicise their involvement with Murphy Pipelines Ltd, who were installing 27.5 km of pipeline, from Aberford, to the East of Leeds, to Pannal, near Harrogate, for National Grid. The new pipeline was one of four which will be linked to carry gas from a new import terminal at Easington, north of the Humber, across to the North West.
This photograph is of the pipe welding operation prior to Murphy Pipelines Ltd installing the pipeline under the River Wharfe near Wetherby using a pneumatic impact hammer. To provide structural support for these two excavations, Murphy Pipelines Ltd called in Groundforce Shorco, who provided bracing beams to keep the pit sides open.
When photographing this project I had to use a tripod and fill-in flash as it was so dark in the pit. The welding process did provide a little extra lighting and made an interesting photograph.
