Architectural photography of Halton Lea Library in Runcorn

Exterior and Interior photography of Halton Lea Library refurbishment

These photographs of Halton Lea Library in Runcorn, were commissioned by the architects to highlight the refurbishment work they had done. As seen in the interior photography, the work comprised opening up a dark confined area and bringing in daylight by way of a glass box atrium. The double height area gave a feeling of space and light and allowed sunlight to stream in. The building photography was challenge to the architectural photographer as the dark interiors had to be lit with studio flash but they had to balance out the bright daylight coming in through the glass atrium, and additionally, the installed fluorescent lighting lent a greeny yellow caste to the image.

Predominently grey interiors tended to pick up any extra colours. and the brightly coloured chairs contrasted particularly well with the neutral colour scheme. The chequerboard flooring photographs well particularly with lighting behind to pick up the weave, but presents similar problems with photography as the floor tiles are grey and will pick up other colours.

The exterior comprised a sixties style tiled shopping arcade with the atrium added for interest. The setting for the glass atrium posed a problem for the architectural photographer as it was in a high courtyard area and north east facing with a small window of time for exterior photography before the sun moved around behind the adjacent building.
