sports photography of waterwalkerz or aqua zorbing on Derwentwater, Cumbria
A new fun sporting activity has arrived from New Zealand for adrenaline seekers - aqua zorbing or sphereing on 'waterwalkerz' a human hamsterball which floats on water. The sphere is made from transparent very durable plastic and can take up to a 200lb weight inside.
We were photographing one of the trial runs on Derwentwater in The Lake District before a waterwalking contest from Keswick to Workington - a fair distance by water, and the pictures certainly show how exhausting it is to self propel one of these orbs using human strength alone.
From a photograpic viewpoint, to get the most interesting images, getting light through the ball creates the best effect and here the silhouetted image gives a dramatic look.
It is necessary to have a backup support team in a nearby boat to pull the orbs away from the shore line and also keeep an eye on the person inside
This experience is a lot of fun to participate in as well as capture photographically and there are many centres offering waterwalking throughout the UK.
